A Word in Season

One of the things that caught my attention this week reminded me of the faith of a child.

I went into the bedroom of our twin grandchildren, Evan and Leah, to pray with them at bedtime. After we prayed, I offered to tell them a story. They were, of course, more than ready for me to do so.

You are not really interested in analyzing what makes sense and what doesn’t. The following morning, the first thing Evan said to me was, "Grandpa, let’s go and find the bear." It was hard to explain to a three-year-old that it was only a story. To him there was no question. He was ready to act upon what he had heard.

Although this was a totally insignificant, made-up children’s story, it was enough to remind me about the reality of a little child’s faith.

My thoughts went to the time when Jesus called some children to Him and said these wonderful words: "I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will

I made the story up as I went along. It was all about meeting and befriending a bear in the woods. Even as the words were coming out of my mouth, I was thinking to myself, None of this makes any sense. I learned, though, that when you have only just had your third birthday, never enter it" (Mark 10:15). The simple trusting faith of a little child is an awesome thing. Children find it very easy to believe. They realize the need for someone stronger and wiser to look after them, and when they are in need, they are quick to run into the arms of someone who loves and protects them.

I remember reading a statement from a great preacher a number of years ago about the faith of children. In his message he said, "I have never met a child who was an atheist. All children are born with a God-given capacity to believe in Him and in His Word. It is when they grow and become adults that unbelief develops."

Every young child I have ever had contact with proves that statement. They are always ready to believe whatever they are told about Jesus without a hint of doubt.

The faith of a child is something for every adult believer to meditate on and pray for.

"Lord, teach us to trust You with the simple faith of a little child. Help us to believe Your Word with the certainty and trust a three-year-old displays when told about the wonderful person You are and the wonderful things You have done."
