As I write this on the 4th of July my thoughts go back to the days when Independence was declared from Great Britain. The eighteenth century was not just a time of political and
military significance for this country, but also a time when spiritually there was a strong faith in God and an adherence to his Word.
In 1776 John Wesley was still preaching both in Britain and here in America. The great George Whitfield had been dead just 6 years but the effects of his powerful evangelistic ministry was still remembered vividly. The church building was the most important one in every community and the majority of the people were God fearing.
America was unique. The people that came here did so with the goal of living for the Lord in a way that was pleasing to Him and being free from the Religious tyranny that tied them to a corrupt State church.
In 1776 after years of struggle, political Independence became a reality.
Just a brief perusal of the “Declaration of Independence” would leave a person in no doubt that the framers, while certainly not all “Born again” believers were all very aware of the providence of a loving and powerful God to whom they owed gratitude, honor and obedience.
Since the Presidential election in November, the difference between now and 1776 becomes clearer and clearer as the days go by.
The will of God is no longer an issue amongst those in office. In fact if any politician today stands for what the bible teaches, he or she gets branded as radical, homophobic bigots by a large cross section of this generation, who consider “Political Correctness” far more important than what God says is right.
The Founding Fathers would be appalled at many of the laws being passed by their political descendants.
Can you imagine the response of a Washington, Adams or Franklin if they had been told that one day in this great land, men would be marrying men and women marrying women?
How do you think that they would have reacted to a law that made it not only legal but a sovereign right for a woman to abort the child in her womb?
Would they have believed it if they had been told that prayer in public schools would be ILLEGAL and that teaching that God was the creator would be not only be dismissed as an absurdity but would actually result in the firing of teachers that dared mention even the possibility of intelligent design by a powerful creator?
America was a God fearing country in 1776 and what made it that way, that a large percentage of the population loved God and His Word, including those who held political office.
Another factor that did so much to establish righteousness in this country, was that during the Nation’s early history, there were a number of powerful revivals, during which the Holy Spirit did a transforming work in thousands of lives.
I firmly believe that revival is the only answer to the problems and issues that we face in America today. It has to start in the church, amongst God’s people but when the church is set on fire by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the rest of the Nation soon finds out and many lost souls are brought to life and hope through the saving work of the Lord Jesus Chris
God bless you
