Footprints in the Sand

This is a song that I wrote back in 1978. I recorded it once before on an album by a Swedish band called “Country Train” when they asked me to appear on their album as a guest soloist.

I had never recorded this song on a Kevin Gould album.

I decided to do it on my latest album “A Wineskin in the Smoke”.

I really wanted my daughter Helen to sing a song on the album and after recording the backing track for “Footprints” I asked her to try it out. Amazingly the key that I had recorded it in suited her perfectly which was very unusual as we sing in very different keys for the most part.

She sang it beautifully and I am so glad that I asked her as she did a much better job than I would have done.

The song was inspired by a story that I read back in the seventies. The Lyrics tell the story.

Footprints in the Sand (Chords and Lyrics)

G                              Am                      D           G

One night I had the strangest dream that ever I recall

G                 C                  Em                       D

Strange but sweet and the memory’s still with me

   G                      Am               D                 G                   C              D

I walked along he seashore with Jesus by my side it felt so good just to have His

 Em

company

               C      Am        G             C            Am        G                               Em

Though I never saw His face as we walked I saw His footprints right next to mine

Em                           C    D                  G

And I heard Him say I’m right by your side

G                               Am                   D                      G

We walked along together two sets of footprints in the sand

G                 C                     Em                  D

When suddenly a cold harsh wind began to blow

  G                      Am            D                         G

I felt so cold and all along I reached out for His hand

G               C                            D                Em

There was none I looked down at the sand below

Em         C            Am G            C            Am        G                             Em

And my heart sank as I saw only one footprint was there and I felt so confused

Em                    C                 D              G

As I wondered why I’d been left on my own

G      C                                   G        Em                            D

Lord why did you leave in the battle? why did you go in my need?

Am                            Em               D/D7

Why did I have to go through it all alone?

G                                          Am                 D                    G

The wind soon dropped and calmness fell around me once again

G                   C               Em                          D

Such sweet relief with my heart at peace once more

D    G                    Am                         D                      G

And as I looked two sets of footprints were back in the sand

G                  C                            D                       Em

And I asked Jesus why there was just one there before?

Em       C             Am   G             C          Am    G

And I heard Him softly say in the sweetest loving way

G                                          Em                                  C                D         G

When you went through that time those footprints were mine I was carrying you
